Question:

Case: Read the passage and answer the following passage

In terms of the susceptibility, we can classify materials as diamagnetic, paramagnetic or ferromagnetic. Diamagnetic substances are those which have tendency to move from stronger to the weaker part of the external magnetic field. In other words, unlike the way a magnet attracts metals like iron, it would repel a diamagnetic substance. Paramagnetic substances are those which get weakly magnetized when placed in an external magnetic field. They have tendency to move from a region of weak magnetic field to strong magnetic field, i.e., they get weakly attracted to a magnet. Ferromagnetic substances are those which get strongly magnetized when placed in an external magnetic field. They have strong tendency to move from a region of weak magnetic field to strong magnetic field, i.e., they get strongly attracted to a magnet.

Which of the following has higher magnetic susceptibility?

Options:

Diamagnetic

Paramagnetic

Ferromagnetic

None of the above

Correct Answer:

Ferromagnetic

Explanation:

The magnetic susceptibility indicates whether a material is attracted into or repelled out of a magnetic field.

M=χH ; where M is magnetization of the material, H is magnetic field strength and χ is magnetic susceptibility.

Ferromagnetic materials like iron and cobalt,  has very large magnetic susceptibility that is positive susceptibility, unlike diamagnetic material which has negative susceptibility
