The wall of the ovary that develops into wall of fruit is called:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 4
The correct answer is Option (4) → Pericarp
After fertilisation, the ovules become seeds and the ovary becomes the fruit. Both changes happen at the same time. The wall of the ovary becomes the wall of the fruit, called the pericarp. The pericarp may be fleshy, as in guava, orange and mango, or dry, as in groundnut and mustard.
(1) Perisperm — Incorrect. Perisperm is the remains of the nucellus that persist in some seeds, such as black pepper and beet. It is inside the seed, not the fruit wall.
(2) Endosperm — Incorrect. Endosperm is the food-storing tissue that develops from the primary endosperm nucleus after triple fusion. It feeds the developing embryo.
(3) Mesocarp — Incorrect. In fleshy fruits the pericarp has three layers: the outer epicarp, the middle mesocarp and the inner endocarp. The mesocarp is only one layer of the fruit wall, not the whole wall.
(4) Pericarp — Correct. The wall of the ovary develops into the wall of the fruit, the pericarp.
