A bus  can be stopped by applying retarding force F when it is moving with speed v on a level road. The distance covered by it before coming to rest is s. If the load of the bus increases by 50% because of passengers, for the same speed and same retarding force, the distance covered by the bus to come to rest shall be :

Correct Answer:

1.5 s

Explanation:

The two cases are : 

  1. \(F s = \frac{1}{2} mv^2\)
  2. \(F s' = \frac{1}{2} (\frac{m}{2}+M)v^2\)

From (1) and (2) : \(\frac{s'}{s} = \frac{3}{2}\)

s' = 1.5 s
