(A) In most plants, the fruit develops from the ovary, other floral parts degenerate and fall off.
(B) Thalamus also contributes to fruit formation in case of apple and cashew. Such fruits are called true fruits.
(C) In parthenocarpic fruits, fruits develop without fertilisation.
(D) Parthenocarpy can't be induced through the application of growth hormones and such fruits are seedless.
Choose the correct answer from the given options.
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 2
The correct answer is Option (2) → B and D only
(A) In most plants, the fruit develops from the ovary, other floral parts degenerate and fall off. — True. After fertilisation the ovary grows into the fruit. The other floral parts wither and fall.
(B) Thalamus also contributes to fruit formation in case of apple and cashew. Such fruits are called true fruits. — False. When the thalamus also takes part in forming the fruit, as in apple, strawberry and cashew, the fruit is a false fruit. A true fruit develops only from the ovary.
(C) In parthenocarpic fruits, fruits develop without fertilisation. — True. Parthenocarpy means fruit formation without fertilisation. Banana is the book’s example.
(D) Parthenocarpy can’t be induced through the application of growth hormones and such fruits are seedless. — False. Parthenocarpic fruits are seedless, but the first half is wrong. Parthenocarpy can be induced by applying growth hormones.
So the incorrect statements are B and D.
NCERT Extract:
Seed – “… In most plants, by the time the fruit develops from the ovary, other floral parts degenerate and fall off. However, in a few species such as apple, strawberry, cashew, etc., the thalamus also contributes to fruit formation. Such fruits are called false fruits (Figure 1.15b). Most fruits however develop only from the ovary and are called true fruits. Although in most of the species, fruits are the results of fertilisation, there are a few species in which fruits develop without fertilisation. Such fruits are called parthenocarpic fruits. Banana is one such example. Parthenocarpy can be induced through the application of growth hormones and such fruits are seedless.”
