The term "Global South" typically refers to option 2: It represents the developing countries of the world. The Global South is a concept used to describe countries and regions that are economically less developed or have lower income levels compared to the more economically advanced countries in the "Global North.
What was obvious at the Rio Summit was that the rich and developed countries of the First World, generally referred to as the ‘global North’ were pursuing a different environmental agenda than the poor and developing countries of the Third World, called the ‘global South’.
