Question:

In the difference between the two numbers is 20 percent of their sum, then what is the ratio of larger number and smaller number ?

Options:

6 : 5

5 : 4

4 : 3

3 : 2

Correct Answer:

3 : 2

Explanation:

Let the numbers be a, b  (a > b)

Then, difference of the numbers i.e. a - b = 20% of (a + b)

a - b = \(\frac{1}{5}\) (a + b)

\(\frac{a-b}{a+b}\) = \(\frac{1}{5}\)

Using componendo and dividendo

\(\frac{2a}{2b}\) = \(\frac{6}{4}\)

a = 3, b = 2

Ratio = 3 : 2
