Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 3
The correct answer is Option (3) → Gonorrhoea
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections that pass from one person to another through sexual contact. Most of them can be cured if found early and treated properly. Three of them cannot be cured completely: hepatitis-B, genital herpes and HIV infection.
(1) HIV infection — Incorrect. HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) causes AIDS. There is no complete cure. Anti-retroviral drugs can only prolong the life of the patient.
(2) Hepatitis-B — Incorrect. Hepatitis-B is caused by a virus that attacks the liver. It is one of the three STIs that are not completely curable. A vaccine can prevent it.
(3) Gonorrhoea — Correct. Gonorrhoea is a bacterial STI. It is completely curable if detected early and treated properly with medicines.
(4) Genital herpes — Incorrect. Genital herpes is caused by a virus. It cannot be cured completely; the virus stays in the body.

Gonorrhoea, syphilis, genital herpes, chlamydiasis, genital warts, trichomoniasis, hepatitis-B and of course, the most discussed infection in the recent years, HIV leading to AIDS are some of the common STIs. Among these, HIV infection is most dangerous and is discussed in detail in Chapter 7. Some of these infections like hepatitis–B and HIV can also be transmitted by sharing of injection needles, surgical instruments, etc., with infected persons, transfusion of blood, or from an infected mother to the foetus too. Except for hepatitis-B, genital herpes and HIV infections, other diseases are completely curable if detected early and treated properly.”
