Why is the proportion of "Self employed" workers high in the rural areas?

People living in rural areas have dependency on farms for livelihood 

In rural areas, majority of people are engaged in agricultural activities and are dependent on farms for cultivation. They cultivate independently on their land, making the share of self employed workers to be greater.
