(E) Halifax — first. It is the eastern end of the Trans-Canadian Railway, on the Atlantic coast.
(A) Sydney — second. It lies close to Halifax, on the Atlantic side of the line.
(D) Quebec — third. Going west, the line reaches the Quebec-Montreal Industrial Region, and Quebec comes first.
(C) Montreal — fourth. It lies west of Quebec in the same industrial region.
(B) Ottawa — last, the westernmost of the five. From Ottawa the line runs on west through Winnipeg and Calgary to Vancouver on the Pacific coast.
Note: The given answer is as per the official NTA Answer Key. There is a contradiction in the book: its text says the Trans-Canadian Railway runs from Halifax in the east, but its map shows Sydney a little east of Halifax. Only Option (1) begins with Halifax and keeps Quebec, Montreal and Ottawa in the book’s order, so only this option supports the answer.
NCERT (2026-27): “Trans–Canadian Railways … This 7,050 km long rail-line in Canada runs from Halifax in the east to Vancouver on the Pacific Coast passing through Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg and Calgary (Fig. 7.6). It was constructed in 1886, initially as part of an agreement to make British Columbia on the west coast join the Federation of States. Later on, it gained economic significance because it connected the Quebec-Montreal Industrial Region with the wheat belt of the Prairie Region and the Coniferous Forest region in the north.”
