Which one of the following hormones is not involved in the process of parturition?
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 4
The correct answer is Option (4) → Prolactin
Parturition is the process of childbirth. It is induced by a complex neuroendocrine mechanism. The fully developed foetus and the placenta send signals that start mild contractions of the uterus, called the foetal ejection reflex. This makes the mother’s pituitary release oxytocin.
(1) Estrogens — A hormone involved in parturition. NCERT names it as one of the three.
(2) Cortisol — A hormone involved in parturition. NCERT names it as one of the three.
(3) Oxytocin — A hormone involved in parturition. It acts on the muscle of the uterus and makes the contractions stronger.
(4) Prolactin — Not a hormone involved in parturition. NCERT does not name it in the control of childbirth. Its work comes after birth, when it helps to start the production of milk.
