Which of the following is not a feature of the ‘Ryotwari’ settlement?
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 2
The correct answer is Option (2) → The revenue demand was to be kept fixed and permanent
The ryotwari settlement was the revenue system introduced in the Bombay Deccan. Unlike the Bengal system, the revenue was settled directly with the ryot. The average income from different types of soil was estimated, the revenue-paying capacity of the ryot was assessed, and a proportion of it was fixed as the share of the state. The lands were resurveyed every 30 years and the revenue rates increased. Options (1), (3) and (4) are all features of this system.
Option (2) is the opposite of it. Because of the resurveys, the revenue demand was no longer permanent. A fixed and permanent demand was the mark of the Permanent Settlement of Bengal.
