Explanation:

Here,

x + y = 48  ..(1.)

x - y =  6    ..(2.)

2x   =  54

⇒ x = 27,

Putting in (1.)

⇒ 27 + y = 48

⇒ y = 48 - 27

⇒ y = 21,

⇒ Ratio of x and y = 27 : 21 = 9 : 7.
