Question:

Which of the following statements is/are  incorrect about mycorrhiza?
i)Mycorrhiza is the symbiotic association of algae and fungi.
ii) Members of the genus Glomus form mycorrhiza.
iii) Plants having mycorrhizal association shows benefits like resistance to root borne pathogens, salinity tolerance and drought resistance etc.

Options:

i

ii

iii

None of these

Correct Answer:

i

Explanation:

The correct answer is Option (1) - i

Mycorrhiza shows a mutually beneficial relationship between the fungus and the roots of higher plants. Lichens are a complex life form that is a symbiotic partnership of two separate organisms, a fungus and an alga.

Fungi are also known to form symbiotic associations with plants (mycorrhiza). Mycorrhizae are mutualistic associations between fungi and plant roots, where the fungi colonize the roots and establish a symbiotic relationship. Many members of the genus Glomus form mycorrhiza. Glomus species are specifically known as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and are the most common and widespread type of mycorrhizal fungi.

Plants that have mycorrhizal associations with fungi do receive several benefits. These benefits include increased nutrient uptake, especially in acquiring phosphorus from the soil, improved water absorption, enhanced resistance to root-borne pathogens, increased tolerance to salinity, and improved drought resistance. The presence of mycorrhizae can significantly improve the overall growth and health of plants by enhancing their nutrient availability and stress tolerance.
