Identify the region of ‘pillar inscription’ of Asoka placed at the centre of map of the Indian subcontinent?
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 2
The correct answer is Option (2) → Sanchi
Asoka’s inscriptions are of three kinds: major rock edicts, minor rock edicts and pillar inscriptions. On the map of the distribution of Asokan inscriptions, each kind has its own sign. The pillar inscription near the centre of the map, in central India, is at Sanchi. Kalsi, Girnar and Sopara are marked on the same map as major rock edicts, not pillar inscriptions.
Tip: Only one of the four places in the options is a pillar inscription, so the legend alone settles this question. Read every map in the chapter properly, together with its legend: the signs tell you what each place is, and questions are made from them.

If we examine the content of these inscriptions, we find virtually the same message engraved everywhere – from the present-day North West Frontier Provinces of Pakistan, to Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Uttarakhand in India.… Map 2 Distribution of Asokan inscriptions…”
