Question:

Average of the marks of 132 students of a college is 50. If the average of the marks of the passed students is 55 and the average of the marks of the failed students is 35, then what will be the respective ratio of the  total marks of passed students and the total marks of failed students ?

Options:

1 : 3

11 : 7

33 : 7

21 : 8

Correct Answer:

33 : 7

Explanation:

The ratio of the number of passed students to failed students

= (50 - 35) : (55 - 50) = 15:5 = 3:1

Suppose no. of passed students = 3x

⇒ No. of failed students = x

Total marks of passed students = 55 x 3x = 165x

Total marks of failed students = 35 × x = 35x

∴ Required ratio = 165x : 35x = 33:7
