Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 2
The correct answer is Option (2) → A’s share Rs. 15,000 and C’s share Rs. 5,000
The retiring partner’s share of goodwill is paid by the continuing partners in their gaining ratio (new share − old share), through their capital accounts.
B’s share of goodwill = 2/6 × Rs. 60,000 = Rs. 20,000
A gains 3/4 − 3/6 = 9/12 − 6/12 = 3/12
C gains 1/4 − 1/6 = 3/12 − 2/12 = 1/12
Gaining ratio of A and C = 3 : 1
A’s share = 3/4 × Rs. 20,000 = Rs. 15,000
C’s share = 1/4 × Rs. 20,000 = Rs. 5,000
Only B’s share of Rs. 20,000 is adjusted, not the whole goodwill of Rs. 60,000; Option (4) splits the full Rs. 60,000.
