It is now conceded that various health outcomes are not only a function of disease but the way we think and behave. This finds reflection in the definition of ‘health’ provided by the World Health Organisation (WHO), which health includes biological, psychological and social aspects of health. At the individual level, psychologists point to various factors such as healthrelated cognitions including attitudes and beliefs, behaviours and social factors which are associated with physical well-being or illness. There is now a growing body of research which shows that social and cultural differences may influence our physiological responses, and may not be the same across all cultures. Psychologists have found strong evidence which shows that behaviours we engage in and our lifestyles greatly influence health. |
