Medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) is the intentional or voluntary ending of a pregnancy before full term. The first trimester is the first three months, that is, the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, and an MTP done in this period carries the least risk to the woman.

Do not mix this up with the legal limit. The MTP (Amendment) Act, 2017 allows a pregnancy to be ended up to 24 weeks in certain cases, with the opinion of two registered medical practitioners after 12 weeks. That is what the law allows, not the period when MTP is relatively safe.
