In the early phase of 1999, forces purporting to be Mujahideens occupied numerous points on the Indian side of the Line of Control (LoC) in the Mashkoh, Dras, Kaksar, and Batalik sectors. The suspicion of Pakistan Army involvement prompted Indian forces to respond, culminating in a confrontation between the two nations known as the Kargil conflict. This conflict persisted throughout May and June 1999. By July 26, 1999, India had successfully regained control over many of the previously occupied positions. Notably, the Kargil conflict gained global attention due to its occurrence shortly after both India and Pakistan had achieved nuclear capability in the prior year. It's important to note, however, that this conflict remained geographically restricted to the Kargil region. In Pakistan, the conflict generated significant controversy, with subsequent claims suggesting that the Prime Minister had been unaware of the Army Chief's actions. Following the conflict, Pakistan saw a change in leadership as the Pakistan Army, under General Parvez Musharraf, assumed control of the government.
