On 8 May 1978, the Italian climber Reinhold Messner and the Austrian Peter Habeler reached the summit of Mount Everest together without bottled (supplementary) oxygen, which many experts had thought impossible. Messner went on to climb it alone, again without oxygen, in 1980.
