Question:

A drum contains 165 liters of ethanol. 44 liters of this liquid is removed and replaced with water. 44 liters of this mixture is again removed and replaced with water. Find quantity of water (in liters) in the drum now?

Options:

80.55

88.73

76.26

71.66

Correct Answer:

76.26

Explanation:

Ethanol : Water

= 165 : 0

After the first exchange,

Ethanol : Water

= 121 : 44 = 11 : 4

After the secong exchange,

Out of 44 litres of this mixture,

ethanol = 44 x \(\frac{11}{15}\)

water = 44 x \(\frac{4}{15}\)

new composition

Ethanol =  (121 - 44 x \(\frac{11}{15}\) ) = 121 x \(\frac{11}{15}\)

Water = (44 - 44 x \(\frac{4}{15}\)  + 44) = 88 - 44 x \(\frac{4}{15}\) = 76.26
