Reproduction in Organisms

Question:

In plants, the vegetative phase is followed immediately by which of the following phase ?

Options:

Reproductive phase

Juvenile phase

Old age

Senescent phase

Correct Answer:

Reproductive phase

Explanation:

The correct answer is Option (1)- Reproductive phase

All organisms have to reach a certain stage of growth and maturity in their life, before they can reproduce sexually. That period of growth is called the juvenile phase. It is known as vegetative phase in plants. This phase is of variable durations in different organisms.

  • In plants, the vegetative phase is the period during which the plant grows in terms of roots, stems, and leaves but does not reproduce.
  • After the vegetative phase, the plant enters the reproductive phase, during which it begins to produce flowers, seeds, and fruits.

The end of juvenile/vegetative phase which marks the beginning of the reproductive phase can be seen easily in the higher plants when they come to flower. Plants –the annual and biennial types, show clear cut vegetative, reproductive and senescent phases, but in the perennial species it is very difficult to clearly define these phases.

Juvenile phase - It is the pre-reproductive phase after birth during which the organism undergoes developmental changes to attain sexual maturity. In plants, it is termed the vegetative phase, and is followed by the reproductive phase.

Reproductive phase - During this period, the organism achieves sexual maturity and becomes capable of reproduction. Subsequently, it transitions into the senescent phase.

Senescent phase - Characterized by gradual aging, this phase marks the decline in the organism's reproductive capacity.
