Hormone releasing Intra Uterine Device is:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 2
The correct answer is Option (2) → LNG-20
Option (1) Lippes loop — Incorrect. Lippes loop is a non-medicated IUD. It releases nothing and works only as a device in the uterus.
Option (2) LNG-20 — Correct. IUDs are devices inserted by doctors into the uterus through the vagina. Progestasert and LNG-20 are the hormone releasing IUDs, while Lippes loop is non-medicated and CuT is copper releasing.
Option (3) Multiload 375 — Incorrect. Multiload 375 is a copper releasing IUD. Its copper ions lower sperm motility and the fertilising capacity of sperms; it releases no hormone.
Option (4) Cu 7 — Incorrect. Cu7, like CuT, is also a copper releasing IUD. The “Cu” in its name is the symbol of copper.

NCERT Extract:
Population Stabilisation and Birth Control – “… Another effective and popular method is the use of Intra Uterine Devices (IUDs). These devices are inserted by doctors or expert nurses in the uterus through vagina. These Intra Uterine Devices are presently available as the non-medicated IUDs (e.g., Lippes loop), copper releasing IUDs (CuT, Cu7, Multiload 375) and the hormone releasing IUDs (Progestasert, LNG-20) (Figure 3.2). IUDs increase phagocytosis of sperms within the uterus and the Cu ions released suppress sperm motility and the fertilising capacity of sperms. The hormone releasing IUDs, in addition, make the uterus unsuitable for implantation and the cervix hostile to the sperms.”
