Question:

Whose invention led to the development of polio vaccine?

Options:

Ernest Haeckel

Jonas Salk

Linus Pauling

Robert Wellberg

Correct Answer:

Jonas Salk

Explanation:

The correct answer is Option 2- Jonas Salk

The invention of Jonas Salk led to the development of the polio vaccine.

Jonas Salk was an American virologist and medical researcher. He is best known for developing the first successful polio vaccine. Salk began working on a polio vaccine in the early 1950s. He tested his vaccine on himself and his family in 1953, and a year later on 1.6 million children in Canada, Finland and the USA. The results were announced on 12 April 1955, and Salk's inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) was licensed on the same day.

Salk's polio vaccine was a major breakthrough in public health. It helped to virtually eradicate polio from the developed world. In 1988, the World Health Assembly launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, with the goal of eradicating polio from the entire world. Thanks to the efforts of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, polio cases have declined by more than 99% since 1988.
