Coitus followed by fertilization leads to formation of zygote. After 9 months of pregnancy, the fully developed foetus is ready for delivery.
The transformation of spermatids into spermatozoa is known as:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 2
The correct answer is Option (2) → Spermiogenesis
Option (1) Spermiation — Incorrect. Spermiation is the release of the sperms from the seminiferous tubules. It comes after spermiogenesis.
Option (2) Spermiogenesis — Correct. The round spermatid gains a head, neck, middle piece and tail and becomes a sperm.
Option (3) Spermatogenesis — Incorrect. Spermatogenesis is the whole process of sperm formation in the testis, from spermatogonia through meiosis to sperms. Spermiogenesis is only its last part.
Option (4) Spermatogoniasis — Incorrect. There is no such process. The cells that start sperm formation are the spermatogonia.

NCERT Extract:
Gametogenesis – “… A primary spermatocyte completes the first meiotic division (reduction division) leading to formation of two equal, haploid cells called secondary spermatocytes, which have only 23 chromosomes each. The secondary spermatocytes undergo the second meiotic division to produce four equal, haploid spermatids (Figure 2.5). … The spermatids are transformed into spermatozoa (sperms) by the process called spermiogenesis. After spermiogenesis, sperm heads become embedded in the Sertoli cells, and are finally released from the seminiferous tubules by the process called spermiation.”
