Ayushman Bharat was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September, 2018 to make quality healthcare equally available to all the sections of the society. It is a national health protection scheme to provide health insurance to citizens. It provides insurance coverage of upto Rs. 5 lakh on a family floater basis to beneficiaries every year in order to receive primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare services. The scheme aims to provide healthcare services to 10 crore families (approximately 50 crore beneficiaries) , mainly poor and having lower middle income. The ten crore families comprise eight crore families in rural areas and 2.33 crore families in urban areas. As in April, 2022, Ayushman Bharat touched the mark of three-crore hospital admissions. Treatment worth Rs. 21,584 crore has already been administered to around three crore beneficiaries since its implementation in 2018. Pradhan Mantri- Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) which is India’s biggest health insurance scheme has brought a revolution in the country. It has ongoing operations in thirty three states or union territories. |
