Dr. B.R. Ambedkar (1891-1956) was a prominent leader of the anti-caste movement & played a pivotal role in the struggle for justice for the Dalits.
He founded the Independent Labour Party, The Scheduled Castes Federation & envisioned the formation of the Republican Party of India.
During World War II he served as a Member of the Viceroy's Executive Council.
He was the chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Constituent Assembly.
Post-independence, he became the Law Minister in Nehru's first cabinet.
However, he resigned from his ministerial post in 1951 due to differences with the government over the Hindu Code Bill.
In 1956, he renounced Hinduism and embraced Buddhism along with thousands of his followers.
He had become frail because of diabetes. On 6th December 1956, he died in his sleep.
