A.K. Gopalan began his political career as a Congress worker (joined in 1927) in Kerala. In 1939, he made the decision to join the Communist Party. Following the split in the Communist Party in 1964, Gopalan aligned himself with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (co-founder).
