Freons are the chlorofluorocarbon compounds of methane and ethane: stable, unreactive, non-toxic and easily liquefiable gases used in refrigeration and aerosol propellants. Freon-12 is dichlorodifluoromethane, CCl₂F₂, made from tetrachloromethane by the Swarts reaction.
