Which of the following traits did Mendel not consider in his hybridisation experiments?
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 4
The correct answer is Option (4) → Pod length
Mendel chose characters of the garden pea that showed two clear contrasting traits. He studied seven such pairs, among them plant height, flower colour, flower position, pod shape, pod colour, seed shape and seed colour. Pod length is not in this list. For the pod he looked only at its shape (inflated or constricted) and its colour (green or yellow).
Option (1) Seed shape — A trait Mendel studied. Seed shape had the traits round and wrinkled.
Option (2) Flower colour — A trait Mendel studied. Flower colour had the traits violet and white.
Option (3) Stem height — A trait Mendel studied. Plant height had the traits tall and dwarf.
Option (4) Pod length — Not a trait Mendel studied. Mendel did not use the length of the pod. His two pod characters were pod shape and pod colour.
Note: Table 4.1 is just seven short rows, and yet it keeps turning into exam questions. Small tables pay big marks, so read every one in NCERT.
NCERT Extract:
Mendel’s Laws of Inheritance – “… Mendel selected 14 true-breeding pea plant varieties, as pairs which were similar except for one character with contrasting traits. Some of the contrasting traits selected were smooth or wrinkled seeds, yellow or green seeds, inflated (full) or constricted green or yellow pods and tall or dwarf plants (Figure 4.1, Table 4.1).”
