Boats and Streams

Question:

A boat can travel 42 km in 6 hours while going upstream. If the speed of the stream is 2 km/h, then bow much distance will the boat cover in 12 hours while going downstream?

Options:

156 km

120 km

132 km

144 km

Correct Answer:

132 km

Explanation:

We know that,

Distance = Speed × Time

Given,

A boat can travel  42 km in 6 hours while going upstream.

The speed of the stream is 2km/h.

Upstream speed = \(\frac{42}{6}\)= 7 km/h

So,

The speed of the boat in still water = 7 + 2 = 9 km

Downstream speed = 9 + 2 = 11 km/h

Now, the distance covered by the boat in 12 hours = 11 × 12 = 132 km
