As per the Census of India, a place is classified as an urban settlement if it satisfies the following criteria:

1. It has a municipality, corporation, cantonment board, or notified town area (statutory town), or

2. It meets all three of the following conditions (for census towns):

   • A minimum population of 5000 persons

   • A population density of at least 400 persons per square kilometer

   • At least 75% of the male working population engaged in non-agricultural activities
