Without contact, for charging a metallic sphere positively :

a negatively charged conductor should be brought close to the surface of the metallic sphere

Charging a conductor by bringing another charged conductor close to it without touching is called induction . Opposite charge is induced while same polarity charge is transferred by contact .Hence a negatively charged conductor should be brought close to the surface of the metallic sphere and negative charge should be transfered by contact.
