Average

Question:

The average weight of a group of 3 people A, B and C is 70 kg. When D joins this group, the average becomes 60 kg. A man E, whose weight is 5 kg more than that of D, replaces A and the average weight of B,C,D and E now becomes 59 kg.What is the average (in kg) of A,D, and E? ( correct the nearest integer )

Options:

40

35

30

39

Correct Answer:

35

Explanation:

Sum of weights of A, B and C = 70 x 3 = 210 kg

Sum of weight when D joins = 60 x 4 = 240 kg

Weight of D = 240 - 210 = 30 kg

Weight of E = 30 + 5 = 35 kg

Sum of weights of B, C, D and E = 59 x 4 = 236 kg

Sum of weight of B, C and D = 236 - 35 = 201= kg

Weight of A = 240 - 201 = 39 kg

Average weight of A, D and E = \(\frac{39 + 30 + 35}{3}\) = 34.66 ≅ 35 kg
