The first thing to be written while writing a formal letter is the sender's address.
- The sender's address identifies who is sending the letter and allows the recipient to respond if necessary.
- Traditionally, it would be written on the top left corner of the paper.
- The other options are not the first element in a formal letter:
- Date: While important, it usually comes after the sender's address, either on the same line or below it.
- Salutation: The salutation ("Dear Mr./Ms. Last Name") comes after the recipient's address and before the body of the letter.
- Subject: This is an optional element and is not always included in formal letters. If included, it would typically come after the salutation.
