Tuckman suggested that groups pass through five developmental stages:
(B) Forming — members first meet; there is uncertainty about the group, the goal and how to reach it, and people try to know each other.
(C) Storming — a stage of intragroup conflict about how to reach the goal and who controls the group; at its end a hierarchy of leadership develops.
(A) Norming — members develop norms of group behaviour, which leads to a positive group identity.
(D) Performing — the structure is accepted and the group moves towards achieving its goal; for some groups this is the last stage.
(E) Adjourning — for groups such as an organising committee, the group is disbanded once its task is over.
