Question:

Two candidates contested an election. The winning candidate scored 54% of the valid votes and won by 88 votes. If 58 votes were declared invalid, find the total number of votes polled in the election?

Options:

1188

1158

1100

1042

Correct Answer:

1158

Explanation:

Let the valid votes = x

As per the question;

Difference of valid votes = 88

i.e

54% of x - 46% of x = 88

8% of x = 88

x = 1100

∴ Total votes polled = valid votes + invalid votes = 1100 + 58 = 1158
