Arrange the given steps of menstrual cycle in correct sequence.
(A) Menstruation
(B) Luteal phase
(C) Follicular phase
(D) Next cycle starts
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 2
The correct answer is Option (2) → (A), (C), (B), (D)
(A) Menstruation — first. The cycle starts with the menstrual phase, which lasts 3-5 days. The endometrium and its blood vessels break down and flow out because the ovum of the last cycle was not fertilised.
(C) Follicular phase — second. The primary follicles grow into a mature Graafian follicle under FSH and LH. The endometrium regenerates under the estrogens from the growing follicles. LH reaches its peak at the middle of the cycle and causes ovulation.
(B) Luteal phase — third. The empty follicle becomes the corpus luteum, which secretes progesterone and keeps the endometrium ready for implantation.
(D) Next cycle starts — fourth. Without fertilisation the corpus luteum degenerates, the endometrium breaks down and a new cycle begins with menstruation.
