Boats and Streams

Question:

The speed of a boat in still water is 16 km/h, the time taken by the boat to cover a distance of 18 km upstream is equal to the time taken by the boat to travel 30Km downstream. What is the speed of the stream?

Options:

7 km/h

5 km/h

4 km/h

6 km/h

Correct Answer:

4 km/h

Explanation:

The speed of a boat in still water = 16 km/h.

Upstream Speed = Speed of Boat – Speed of current

Downstream Speed = Speed of Boat + Speed of current

Let the speed of the stream = b

according to the question,

\(\frac{18}{16 - x}\) = \(\frac{30}{16 + x}\) ,

\(\frac{3}{16 - x}\) = \(\frac{5}{16 + x}\)

= 48 + 3x = 80 - 5x

= 8x = 32

= x = 4
