In 1854, Walter Elliot, the commissioner of Guntur (Andhra Pradesh), visited Amaravati and collected numerous sculpture panels, which he later took to Madras. These sculptures became known as the Elliot marbles in his honor. During his visit, he also uncovered the remains of the western gateway and deduced that Amaravati housed one of the most extensive and splendid Buddhist stupas ever constructed. Subsequently, in the 1850s, some of the slabs from Amaravati were transported to various locations, including the Asiatic Society of Bengal at Calcutta, the India Office in Madras, and even to London. These sculptures were frequently used to adorn the gardens of British administrators, a common practice during that time. |
