Copper-T prevents pregnancy mainly by:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 1
The correct answer is Option (1) → Inhibiting sperm motility
Copper-T is a copper-releasing intra-uterine device (IUD). An IUD is a small device placed inside the uterus by a doctor. IUDs are of three kinds: non-medicated (Lippes loop), copper-releasing (Cu-T, Cu7, Multiload 375) and hormone-releasing (Progestasert, LNG-20).
(1) Inhibiting sperm motility — Correct. The copper ions released by the device lower the motility of sperms and their ability to fertilise the ovum. The device also increases the phagocytosis (engulfing) of sperms in the uterus.
(2) Increased estrogen production — Incorrect. Copper-T releases no hormone. Only the hormone-releasing IUDs release hormones, and these are progestogens.
(3) Preventing ovulation — Incorrect. An IUD does not stop the ovary from releasing the ovum. Oral contraceptive pills work that way, by inhibiting ovulation.
(4) Cervical blockade — Incorrect. Blocking the cervix is the job of barrier methods such as diaphragms, cervical caps and vaults.
