Who gave an account on ‘how silver came to India’ during the Mughal empire?
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 4
The correct answer is Option (4) → Giovanni Careri
The Italian traveller Giovanni Careri, who passed through India in about 1690, gave an account of how silver came to India, based on Bernier’s account. He wrote that all the gold and silver which circulates throughout the world at last centres here: silver from America passed through Europe, Turkey and Persia, and ended up in India to pay for Indian goods. His account shows the enormous wealth that flowed into the Mughal Empire through trade.
NCERT (2025-26): “7. The Flow of Silver … The testimony of an Italian traveller, Giovanni Careri, who passed through India c. 1690, provides a graphic account about the way silver travelled across the globe to reach India. It also gives us an idea of the phenomenal amounts of cash and commodity transactions in seventeenth-century India.”
