Amar and Bahadur are partners in a firm sharing profits in the ratio of 3:2. They admitted Mary as a new partner for 1/4 share. The new profit sharing ratio between Amar and Bahadur will be 2:1. Calculate their sacrificing ratio.
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 2
The correct answer is Option (2) → 2:3
The sacrificing ratio is the ratio in which the old partners give up their share of profit for the new partner. Each partner’s sacrifice is old share − new share.
New shares of Amar and Bahadur:
Mary’s share = 1/4
Share left for Amar and Bahadur = 1 − 1/4 = 3/4
Amar’s new share = 2/3 × 3/4 = 1/2
Bahadur’s new share = 1/3 × 3/4 = 1/4
Sacrifices (old shares in 3:2 are 3/5 and 2/5):
Amar = 3/5 − 1/2 = 2/20
Bahadur = 2/5 − 1/4 = 3/20
Sacrificing ratio = 2/20 : 3/20 = 2:3
Check: 2/20 + 3/20 = 5/20 = 1/4, which is Mary’s share.
