Question:

In an election between two candidates, 5% of the registered voters did not cast their vote. 10% of the votes were found to be either invalid or of NOTA. The winning candidate received 60% votes in his favour and won the election by 17271 votes. Find the number of registered voters.

Options:

90525

100000

101000

102500

Correct Answer:

101000

Explanation:

Let the total number of voters be 100x

5% of them did not cast votes

Total cast votes ,

= 100x × \(\frac{95}{100}\) = 95x casted votes

10% of 95 pressed NOTA

90% of 95 casted votes,

= \(\frac{90}{100}\) × 95 = \(\frac{9}{2}\)× 19x

Winner gets 60% then looser must be getting 40%

Diiference between them is 60% - 40% = 20%

 20% of \(\frac{9}{2}\) × 19x = 17,271

 \(\frac{1}{5}\) × \(\frac{9}{2}\) × 19x = 17,271

1x = 1010

∴ Total voters = 100x = 100 × 1010 = 1,01,000
