Lal Bahadur Shastri served as the Prime Minister of India from 9 June 1964 until his death on 11 January 1966. Lal Bahadur Shastri held the position of India's Prime Minister from 1964 to 1966. During this relatively brief period, the nation confronted two significant and pressing challenges. The aftermath of the conflict with China and its economic implications persisted, while the combination of failed monsoons, drought, and an acute food crisis posed a grave dilemma. Additionally, as previously explored, India engaged in a war with Pakistan in 1965. Symbolizing the nation's determination to address these adversities, Shastri's renowned slogan 'Jai Jawan Jai Kisan' became a beacon of resolve. Shastri's tenure as Prime Minister came to an unexpected conclusion on January 10, 1966, with his sudden passing in Tashkent, a city then located in the USSR (now the capital of Uzbekistan). He was in Tashkent to engage in discussions and finalize an agreement with Muhammad Ayub Khan, who was serving as the President of Pakistan at that time. This agreement aimed to bring an end to the war between the two countries. |
