Question:

The distance b/w two railway stations is 1176 km.  To cover this distance, an express train takes 10 hours less than a passenger train. While the avg. speed of the passenger train is 35 km/h less than that of express train.  The time taken by passenger train to complete the travel is:

Options:

24

22

18

30

Correct Answer:

24

Explanation:

Time = t,

ATQ,

Speed of express = \(\frac{1176}{t - 10}\)

Speed of passenger = \(\frac{1176}{t}\)

\(\frac{1176}{t - 10}\) - \(\frac{1176}{t}\) = difference of speeds

\(\frac{1176}{t - 10}\) - \(\frac{1176}{t}\) = 35 km/h

1176t - 1176t + 11760 = 35t (t - 10)

11760 = 35t (t - 10)

336 = t (t - 10)

On solving it t = 24
