Question:

A Police officer sees a chain snatcher and runs to catch her from a distance of 50 metres. When the Police officer starts chasing the chain snatcher from a distance of 50 metres, the chain snatcher is running @ 2 metres per second. At the same time the Police Oficer is chasing the chain snatcher @ 4 metres per second.

Find the distance covereed by the chain snatcher when the Police Officer shall be able to successfully catch her?

Options:

50 metres

60 metres

150 metres

100 metres

Correct Answer:

50 metres

Explanation:

The correct answer is Option (1) → 50 metres

Let the distance to be covered by the police officer to catch the chain snatcher be d meters.

Let the time taken be t seconds.

Relative speed of the police officer with respect to the chain snatcher:

$= 4 - 2 = 2$ m/s

The police officer starts 50 m behind, so:

$\text{Time to catch} = \frac{50}{2} = 25$ seconds

Distance covered by the chain snatcher in 25 seconds:

$= 2 \times 25 = 50$ meters

Answer: The chain snatcher covers 50 meters before being caught.
