Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), also called sexually transmitted infections (STIs), are infections that pass from one person to another through sexual contact. Common ones are gonorrhoea, syphilis, genital herpes, chlamydiasis, genital warts, trichomoniasis, hepatitis-B and HIV leading to AIDS.
(1) Syphilis — A sexually transmitted disease. It is one of the common STIs.
(2) Genital herpes — A sexually transmitted disease. It is caused by a virus that spreads through sexual contact.
(3) Hepatitis-B — A sexually transmitted disease. Hepatitis-B spreads through sexual contact, and also by sharing needles and syringes and by transfusion of infected blood.
(4) Cancer — Not a sexually transmitted disease. Cancer is the uncontrolled division of the body’s own cells. It is not an infection, so it cannot pass from one person to another by sexual contact.
