Which one of the following hormones is not involved during parturition?
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 2
The correct answer is Option (2) → Prolactin
Parturition is the delivery of the foetus (childbirth). It is induced by a complex neuroendocrine mechanism. The fully developed foetus and the placenta send signals that cause mild uterine contractions, the foetal ejection reflex. This makes the mother’s pituitary release oxytocin. Oxytocin causes stronger contractions, which release still more oxytocin, until the baby is delivered.
(1) Cortisol — A hormone involved in parturition. It is one of the three hormones that start the process.
(2) Prolactin — Not a hormone involved in parturition. It acts after the birth, when it helps the mammary glands to make milk.
(3) Oxytocin — A hormone involved in parturition. It strengthens the uterine contractions.
(4) Estrogen — A hormone involved in parturition. It is also one of the three hormones named for the process.
