Shubham and Gill are partners in a firm sharing profits in the ratio of 5:3. They admit Hardik as a new partner for 1/7 share in the profit. The new profit sharing ratio will be 4:2:1. What will be the sacrificing ratio of Shubham and Gill?
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 1
The correct answer is Option (1) → 3:5
The sacrificing ratio is the ratio in which the old partners give up their shares to the new partner. Each partner’s sacrifice is old share minus new share.
Old shares: Shubham = 5/8, Gill = 3/8
New shares: Shubham = 4/7, Gill = 2/7
Shubham’s sacrifice = 5/8 − 4/7 = (35 − 32)/56 = 3/56
Gill’s sacrifice = 3/8 − 2/7 = (21 − 16)/56 = 5/56
Sacrificing ratio = 3/56 : 5/56 = 3 : 5
The sacrificing ratio is not the old ratio here, because the new ratio 4 : 2 : 1 is given; Gill gives up more though his old share is smaller. Option (2) 4 : 2 is only the new ratio of the two old partners.
